Q1: What industry are you in?

A: I specialize in TV Programming and Content Acquisition for two Korean entertainment channels. These channels are targeting audiences in Southeast Asia.

Q2: Can you tell us about your personal work background and career path?

A: I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in Korean Studies. I was interested in working for a Korean company, and my lecturer introduced me to this company. I initially started as an assistant in programming and have since progressed to a managerial role handling both programming and content acquisition for the channels.

Q3: What are the responsibilities of your current role, and what do you enjoy about it?

A: In the programming aspect, I handle tasks such as planning the program schedule, coordinating videos and subtitles with the technical team, and working with the marketing team on program promotion. As for content acquisition, I am responsible for procuring TV programs to be aired on the channels. This involves budget planning, negotiation with licensors, and handling contracts. I particularly enjoy this job because it allows me to engage with my interest in K-pop and Korean content, providing me with firsthand knowledge about Korean contents and the opportunity to bring them to my audience. Additionally, I appreciate the teamwork and communication required in this role.

Q4: Could you share a memorable professional experience?

A: Attending local and international content markets, such as Hong Kong Filmart and Korea's Asian Content Film Market, has been memorable experiences for me. These events provided the opportunity to meet various industry professionals and gain valuable insights from them.

Q5: What personality traits are well-suited for this profession?

A: Individuals who have a strong passion for content, enjoy teamwork and coordination with different parties, and possess detail-oriented and planning skills are well-suited for this profession.

Q6: Are there any considerations or limitations in this profession?

A: TV industry is experiencing a decline worldwide, leading to the shrinking of TV businesses or a shift towards OTT platforms (e.g., VIU, myTV SUPER). Working in OTT platforms can be an alternative. Particularly in Hong Kong, opportunities in the content field may be limited due to the scarcity of such companies. Therefore, one may need to consider seeking opportunities in Singapore or other countries later on.

Q7: How can someone enter this profession, and what are the promotion opportunities?

A: One can enter this profession by exploring job openings at TV stations. All backgrounds and areas of study are welcomed. However, given the company I worked for specialises in Korean content, a deep understanding of Korean culture or language would be preferred. As for promotion opportunities, they generally depend on the structure and policies of each individual company.
